Leroy Edwin Harsin
Leroy E. Harsin, 87, of Lexington, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 2009,
at King's Daughters' Hospital.
Born May 13, 1922 in the big creek area, near Dupont, Indiana he was the son of Shirley and Agnes (Smart) Harsin, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by one infant brother, Earl Melvin Harsin and one sister Lorraine Smith.
Mr. Harsin lived in the Big Oaks Area until it was procured in 1941 for the Jefferson Proving Ground. He attended Big Creek School and North Madison High school having graduated there in 1938. While living in this area he attended Liberty Christian Church becoming a member there at an early age. Then in 1941 Mr. Harsin moved to Chelsea and was employed at the Charlestown Powder Plant for two years. In May of 1943 he was inducted into the Navy and served until December of 1945. He was a Gunnery Instructor and attained the rating of Gunners Mate second class. He then attended Hanover College and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Science in 1952. Mr. Harsin taught for a short time and then gained employment at the Jefferson Proving Ground, working there as a Proof Technician until retirement in 1978. He is a Past Master in the Hanover Masonic Lodge #652 and a Past Patron in the Order of the Eastern Star #525. He formerly held membership in NARFE and the JPG Conservation Association. He is now a member of the JPG Heritage Partnership.
During retirement he traveled extensively having spent two summers in Arkansas. He enjoyed farming, gardening, hunting, fishing and looking for mushrooms and herbs, and he loved making maple syrup.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Hebron Cemetery Association or the Hanover Masonic Lodge #652. Contribution cards will be available at the Vail-Holt Funeral Home
